Songs & Updates for Holy Week 2025

Holy Week

Thanks for a great Palm Sunday celebration last week! We were again a small group, but everything sounded lovely! The splits on Where You There? were especially nice :-). Here's the audio

Good Friday
Friday, April 18th @ 2:00 PM

Director: Cris (& Barb P.)
Singers: Cris, Melissa (tentative), Lisa, Frank, Bev, Barb P., Barry, Jake, Ben, Ginny
Instrumentalists: Bev (piano), Frank (guitar), Karen (flute)
Out: Joe, Maureen

We'll meet at 1:00 PM to run the program. Please come ~15 min. early if you need time to set up! That way, we can start right at 1:00. Preludes will begin at ~1:50 PM.

If possible, please wear RED. Red is the liturgical color for Good Friday, so it would be nice to match.

Let's plan to use the front row choir & guitar mics (normal Saturday setup); if needed, we can have others use the second row large-group mics. That way, we're not too crowded.

There will be songsheets for this liturgy. Since there's not that much music, we can probably put numbers up on the boards too.

It goes without saying that Good Friday is a more somber liturgy. If you're able to pull music into black binders, that'll avoid messing with books too much. I'll also try to keep conducting patterns 'small' (but still clear!) to minimize distractions to the congregation.

I think that's it. Let me know if you have questions!

Preludes:
‘Seasonal Suite: Holy Week’ (arr. Hommerding) [Bev & Karen]

Who is That Man? (Besig)
Materials (**links removed**))

Opening Rite:
None/In Silence

(no Penitential Rite)

Responsorial Ps (Barb P.):
SS #058 - Ps 22 - My God, My God (Smith)
Materials (**links removed**))

**Let's make sure we're in-sync with the triplets on the refrain. This wasn't really an issue last week, but can more more of a challenge with a larger group :-).**

Acclamation (All):
GC3 #511 - Were You There? (Spiritual)
Materials (**links removed**))

**Just like last week, this will be sung a capella as the Gospel Acclamation -- before, during & after the reading of The Passion. The verses are as follows (the middle verse isn't in the book):

Before: “Were you there when they crucified my Lord?”
Pause: “Were you there when He bowed His head and died?”
After: “Were you there when they laid Him in the tomb?”

Last week's tempo was just about perfect! We should also check a couple of small things with parts.**

Solemn Intercessions (Cris & Barb P.):
Materials (**links removed**))

**Barb & I will cantor each Intercession. It'll be followed by a sung response ("Lord, here our prayer.") and a spoken prayer by Father. That sequence will repeat ten times.**

Solemn Procession:
GC3 #514 - Behold the Wood (Schutte)
Materials (**links removed**))

**The refrain is sung three times as the Cross is brought up the aisle: once at the back of the Sanctuary, again in the middle of the aisle and a final time at the front of the Sanctuary.

Deacon: “Behold, behold, the wood of the Cross, on which is hung our salvation.”
All: “O come, let us adore.”

Dcn. Jack will sing the first part of the refrain (in his words) "in the key of me". We'll then genuflect & respond with the second half. There will be a cue note so that we're together on pitch.**

Veneration:
SS #172 - Behold the Cross (Hurd)
Materials (**links removed**))

**Let's do this the same as last week -- play the intro & first verse once, before one of us starts the singing. Please include the harmonies on verses 3 & 4! We'll sing all five verses (no repeats).**

GC3 #510 - Jesus, Remember Me (Berthier)
Materials (**links removed**))

**The goal will be to keep repeating the Ostinato Refrain as long as needed. We'll add/remove voices & instruments (and play with dynamics) each repeat to keep things interesting. Please watch for tempo & cues -- we definitely don't want to rush this!**

(no Mass Parts)

Communion Rite:
GC3 #512 - O Sacred Head, Surrounded (Traditional)
Materials (**links removed**))

**This will be done a capella. We'll sing all three verses (in parts!) before moving on to our second piece. It might make sense to have everyone go up to receive either before or after singing this.**

GC3 #476 - Adoramus Te Christe (Haugen)
Materials (**links removed**))

**As discussed, we'll follow the written arrangement, including the three-part canon. I believe Lisa, Jake & Frank are our leads on each part. The final refrain will be a capella.**

Meditation:
GC #419 - Calvary (Spiritual)
Materials (**links removed**))

**This will be done a capella. We'll sing the refrain twice at the very beginning & end of the piece (the first time on 'ooo'; the second time text). The verses will be back-to-back (everyone -- no cantors).**

Closing:
None/In Silence

Director: Barb P. (& Cris)

We're joining the 8:30 folks for an Organ Mass this year!

As it stands, I'm on to cantor things like the Psalm, Easter Sequence & Acclamation (unless anyone else wants the Acclamation?). The rest we'll do as a large group. Since this is Barb's program, we'll go through the details on Saturday. If you have any questions in the interim, though, please let me know!

On Sunday, please be at the Church by 7:45 AM. That'll give us time to set up and spot check music. The building should be open by 7:00 AM, so access (hopefully!) shouldn't be a problem.
