Songs & Updates for December 23 & 24, 2023 [updated]

4th Sunday of Advent

Good work last week! The music for the Pageant came together nicely (don't be surprised if we're asked to do this again :-) and Mass went well too. I appreciate your staying for back-to-back events! The audio can be found here and here

If you weren't able to check out the recent Our Lady of Guadalupe celebration, please do visit the Parish's public Facebook page for photos/video. It was a very special event and the Mariachi Band was definitely a highlight!

A reminder that our Christmas Eve 'dress rehearsal' is this Saturday at 2:30 PM. We'll run through the entire program (except for Mass Parts) and sort out any logistics. If you're not here for Christmas, regular Mass rehearsal will still be at 4:00.

Please take a look at Awake! Awake, and Greet the New Morn if it's unfamiliar. We've only done this a few times before. Getting through four verses (hopefully) shouldn't be an issue.

For Gift of God, check out the recording for how this flows. The Advent verses don't have everything written out, but we'll follow the same format as the Christmas verses (ie the refrain is sung between each phrase of the verse -- almost cantor/response-style). We'll spend a bit of extra time on this.

Given that there's only two 'regular' Masses for the 4th Sun. of Advent (5:00 & 10:30), it's possible we'll see a larger crowd on Saturday. Just something to keep in mind, especially for Communion.

UPDATE: 12/21: See a separate email from Barb about some adjustments to the sound system, particularly, the overhead speakers & ambo mic.

Looking ahead, I'm hoping to select/finalize music for January (and possibly February) over the holiday break. If you haven't already, please let me know of any weeks you're out.

(All Mass Parts, except the Gospel Acclamation, are from Mass of Joy & Peace, including Penitential Rite, Holy, Eucharistic Acclamation 'A' (We Proclaim Your Death), Doxology & Lamb of God)

Nativity of the Lord / Christmas Eve

As a reminder, there will be three Masses on Christmas Eve, plus one on Christmas Day:
  • 12/24 @ 4:00 PM - Children's Mass w/ Children's Choir
  • 12/24 @ 6:00 PM - led by 10:30 AM Choir
  • 12/24 @ 8:00 PM - led by 5:00 PM Choir
  • 12/25 @ 10:00 AM - led by 8:30 AM Choir
We likely won't be able to meet until 7:00-7:15 (depending on how long the 6:00 Mass runs). Please be here by 6:45 just to be safe. We'll set up, briefly spot-check music & sing preludes around 7:45.

Since there's only three of us singing (Lisa, Jake & I -- Christmas Trio?), I'd suggest gathering around the guitar stand, rather than using the choir mics. We can pull up a third mic & stand so everyone's covered. This way, we can hear/see each other. Of course, if others join, we can reevaluate.

As for parts, I'd like to split things out as much as possible. Generally-speaking, we should be able to pull off soprano/alto/tenor for the SATB pieces. I'm also open to alternate harmonies and/or accompaniments, as long as everything fits together :-). Stay tuned for a separate email on this.

Note that we'll be re-introducing the Gloria, but (I believe) the Penitential Rite will not be sung. For the Acclamation, we'll revert back to vs 3 or 4 (there's no dedicated Christmas verse, unfortunately).

For Communion, I'll be singing a Meditation piece with Bev; this will be followed by our usual arrangement of Silent Night / Night of Silence, with Jake cantoring the Night of Silence verses. If we still need more time, we'll go into Wood of the Cradle

If possible, I'd like to get a group photo of everyone sometime that evening. Also, if anyone can stick around after Mass to help with cleanup, that would be appreciated! Since we're the last Mass of the night, it would be good to wrap up fairly quickly so we can all go home :-).

Finally, thanks so much for everything you've done this season! Between the Pageant, Children's Mass & 8 PM Mass, we've had more Christmas activities than usual. And we've had to pull these off with less musicians than before! This Ministry & season means a great deal to me, so I'm happy that we can celebrate together! Here's to wishing each of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
