Songs & Updates for Saturday, June 16, 2018 [updated]

Last week, we ended up with a pretty small group for a piano-based Mass. Thanks to all who were able to be there! For a first run, the new Communion song went reasonably well, although there are definitely some areas that still need work. I appreciate everyone's willingness to give this new piece a chance; once we work out the bugs, it should be a great addition to our repertoire.

A revised/updated cantor schedule went out over the weekend. I had to shuffle a few people around due to availability issues.

I've started picking the music for July. If you're aware of any absences during that month, please let me know so we can plan accordingly. There are also several songs tentatively on the board that would sound great in parts (for example, Come to Me, O Weary Traveler). If any of our choral subgroup folks would be up for giving these a shot, I'd be happy to work with you.

A Memorial Mass for Bob Killoren will be held on Sunday, August 19th at 11 AM. No details yet, but will send an update when I have more info.

Over the years, we've done Seek Ye First in many different arrangements. We've added extra bars to the end of each verse, repeated verses, added instrumentals and used (or skipped) the optional 'Alleluia' refrain/descant. The current version in GC includes four verses and the refrain/descant. Let's take some time to sort out how we're going to arrange it this go around.

For O Taste and See, the verse entrances and some of the melody lines could use attention. If we could dedicate some time to work through these, that should help us moving forward. Keep in mind that even though the melody on each verse is different, many of the same phrases/rhythms repeat. Also, since we're in 2/2 time, reading the music requires a bit of extra mental translation (ie the black notes behave like eighths and the white notes like quarters). I'll be available at 4 PM if anyone would like to come early.

Bev will be out next Saturday, 06/23.
