Songs & Updates for Saturday, April 9, 2016

This Saturday is the 3rd Sunday of Easter.
We were pretty sort-staffed last week. Chris, our piano coverage, had something come up and wasn't able to make it, but did arrange for Joanne Y. from Penn State to fill in. Despite it being Joanne's first time playing a Catholic Mass and not having much prep time, overall, everything went well. It was great to have her with us! Tom also covered guitar and Lisa cantored the Mass from the guitar mics. Ginny, Lise, Rose and Steve rounded out the singers.

Our music for April was approved with no changes.

Last week, we used the Penitential Rite from Mass of Remembrance. Father Charlie cantored it. I'm assuming we'll continue using this throughout what's left of the Easter season.

'I Will Praise You, Lord' is a Psalm we've only used once before. If anyone is interested in tackling this, let me know; otherwise, I'll tentatively plan to cantor since I'm probably the most familiar with it.

Our Offertory song, 'Wondrous Love', is not one we normally do, but I thought it might make for an interesting change in pace. Perhaps this could be done in a similar fashion to 'Where Charity and Love Prevail'. Another possibility is to do it along the lines of the Gather recording below -- I like how this arrangement maintains the solemn feel, but also keeps the tune moving at an upbeat tempo.

'In the Breaking of the Bread' is our Communion song for this month. If you aren't familiar with this song, please look it over. Last week, I wrote out a new transcription that was (hopefully) a bit easier to follow (no Spanish) and includes all four verses. I doubt we'll need all four, though, since both the refrain and verse are pretty long. I'd also love to take advantage of the written harmonies if you have a chance to work on those.

No practice after Mass this week.

Finally, just a planning note that I'll be out on 4/23 -- I'm working on the BEA Spring Musical, Thoroughly Modern Millie, that evening (with Karina playing the lead :-). It'll be our Closing Night.
