Songs & Updates for Holy Week 2019

Holy Week 2019

Thanks for a lovely Palm Sunday Mass last week! The turnout was light and things were a bit hectic, but the music came together well (recordings HERE). We also had a chance to touch on some Easter music afterward.

Apologies for the long post, but the final plan for Good Friday and Easter Sunday is below. Let me know of any questions. Once again, I really appreciate all of your hard work and dedication -- the extra practices, etc., go a long way toward making Holy Week (and the Lent/Easter season) a success.

Beyond the liturgies we're covering, I'd also encourage you to join the Sunday choirs for Holy Thursday (04/18 @ 7 PM) and/or Easter Vigil (04/20 @ 8:30 PM), both of which are always beautiful Masses. Details went out by email. Otherwise, I'll see you Friday/Saturday for dress rehearsal!

Good Friday:
Dress Rehearsal - Friday, 04/19 @ 12:30 PM (Church)
Service @ 2:00 PM (prelude @ ~1:55 PM)

The music for Good Friday is below (final songsheet HERE). As it stands now, Bev, Maggie, Ken, Lisa, Brad and I are planning to be there. Some 9 AM Choir folks may be joining us as well. If we could meet at 12:30 Friday afternoon to run the program, that would be great! Since we'll be such a small group, please learn the voice parts if you're able.

Just a few notes:
  • Were You There - Sung a capella before, during and after the reading of The Passion. In a change from Palm Sunday, note that the second verse isn't in the book ("where you there when he bowed his head and died...").
  • Behold the Wood - Father will sing "Behold, behold the wood of the Cross, on which is hung our salvation" three times as Cross is brought up the isle; we'll genuflect and respond with "O come, let us adore". Song will be treated like Communion once Veneration begins.
  • Calvary - Intended as a Meditation, but this will likely be long enough to cover Communion. We'll use the arrangement we've been working on in rehearsal.
  • Jesus, Remember Me - Listed as the Communion song, but will likely be done as an instrumental Closing (while congregation/ministers depart). Song will be built up with different instruments and background vocals as we go.
Finally, if you can stick around afterword (no worries either way), I'm going to take an hour or so to set up the choir space in the Parish Hall. We'll deal with sound equipment setup before Easter dress rehearsal on Saturday, but I'd at least like to get the space configured.

Easter Sunday:
**No Regular 5:30 PM Mass due to Easter Vigil**
Easter Sunday Dress Rehearsal - Saturday, 04/20 from 1-3 PM (Hall)
Easter Sunday Mass - Sunday, 04/21 @ 9 AM (report time 7:45 AM) (Hall)

The music for Easter Sunday is below (final songsheet HERE). Just like Christmas, please don't forget to bring any necessary sound equipment, music stands and your black binders (with copies of all sheet music)Joe has once again agreed to share his gear and set up/manage the sound system. I'll bring over some stands and instrument books from the Church, as well as a few songbooks just in case.

The goal for Saturday is to run the entire program, sort out/finalize arrangements and go through logistics. We'll get the sound system up and working before starting practice, so please come early if you have any equipment to set up and/or need extra prep time. Since we're the only group using this space, we should be able to leave everything standing for Sunday.

The pieces that will probably need the most attention are Open the Eyes of My Heart, I Will Rise and Whom Do You Seek?. Also keep in mind that the acoustics in the Hall are very 'flat' (ie the sound doesn't resonate across the room), so we may need to tweak how we approach things a bit to compensate. Otherwise, this should be a fun program with lots of familiar music :-)

The report time for Mass Sunday morning is 7:45 AM. Preludes will begin around 8:45 AM for a 9 AM Mass. If we could squeeze in a group photo at some point, that would be great. I may also need a hand with cleanup afterward if anyone is able to stick around.

Looking forward to a wonderful Easter, and if I don't see you, have a safe, happy holiday!
