This Saturday is Palm Sunday, the official beginning of Holy Week.
Thanks for another solid Mass last week! There were a few minor issues, but nothing serious. Our new Closing song, River of Glory, came together quite well and would probably be worth doing again.
During rehearsal, I asked singers to gather around the piano. This way, there's not so much of a divide between myself and the instrumentalists up front, and singers in the back (ie we can hear each other in terms of directions and voice parts). If there are no objections, I'd like to continue doing this moving forward. I'm also making an effort to keep practices on a schedule, mainly to avoid losing so much time at the beginning.
Since it's Palm Sunday, the beginning part of Mass won't follow the usual format (check out the program here). The liturgy will open with a silent procession, Blessing of Palms and Gospel reading. The King of Glory will be done after the reading as our 'Procession of Palms' piece (don't forget the change in dynamics between refrain and verse).
Were You There will be used as the Gospel Acclamation, with three different verses interspersed throughout the reading of the Passion (one at the beginning and two near the end). This is usually sung a capella in parts. The second verse is not in the book.
In addition, the version of My God, My God we'll be using is new. If you haven't already, please look at this. The refrain is pretty straight-forward, but the verses are a bit tricky.
For Offertory, Father usually likes us to do all five verses of Behold the Cross (will confirm).
Finally, please plan to stick around after Mass to look at music for Easter Sunday and Good Friday. Our rehearsal time during Holy Week will be limited (this is especially true for Easter Sunday), so it's important that we sort out the details at this practice. The plan and tentative music for Holy Week went out in a separate email (here). I'd be happy to order in food for dinner. We'll wrap up by 8:30 PM.
Tom is out this week.
