Songs & Updates for Saturday, July 16, 2016

This Saturday is the 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
We had a nice-sized group of singers for Mass last Saturday. Jim and Maggie covered instruments, and Mass was one of our strongest in a while. Thanks to everyone who was able to be there! I especially enjoyed doing 'Servant Song' a capella. 'Taste and See' was also starting to come together nicely during rehearsal, but we ran into an instrumental tempo issue during Mass.

I'm looking for a volunteer to cantor the Psalm, 'They Who Do Justice'. If interested, let me know! The same goes for the verses on 'Bring Forth the Kingdom'.

Instrument-wise, with the exception of Tom, we should be at full-staff this week. I don't believe Jim and Maggie have had the chance to work with Eva, our new pianist, before, so if instrumentalists could arrive perhaps a few minutes early for practice, that would be great. I want to allow plenty of time to make sure everyone's on the same page with tempos, arrangements, etc.. Having piano should also help to alleviate some of the tempo issues with 'Taste and See'.

As some of you already know, my sister Karina is heading off to Basic Training for the US Marine Corps on Sunday, 7/17. After going through Basic and spending six months studying music, she'll join the USMC Band where she'll travel and perform.

Karina joined our little ensemble around 2009 (?) when Luke, Jim and Tyler were jointly running the group. She was our lead 'band' instrument for several years, and her talent and skill added so much to our music. Although Karina hasn't played regularly at Saturday Mass for some time, she's continued her involvement with the Music Ministry by helping out our counterparts at the Sunday Masses. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers as she embarks on this new chapter of her life!

There was some discussion of having Karina join us one last time before she ships out, but unfortunately, she'll be tied up with other plans. If folks are still interested in sticking around after Mass for a bite to eat and/or some extra practice time, let me know. There are one or two songs I wouldn't mind looking at (next week's closing song is 'Standin' in the Need of Prayer' :-), but nothing that can't wait. Plus, I know it's Arts Fest weekend.

Tom is out through the end of this month.
